The President’s Report of the European University Institute has changed its format in recent years and now includes a comprehensive section about the activities of the Historical Archives of the European Union.
Researchers, depositors and stakeholders can gain detailed insight into the work done at the Historical Archives by consulting the most recent annual report (pages 72-77), released in Spring 2018.
According to this report, the HAEU received almost 11,000 new files from European Institutions, including the Council, the European Investment Bank, the Court of Justice, the European Parliament and EU Agencies. During that same time period, approximately 41,000 files from EU institutions were published in our database.
Additionally 1,000 new private archival papers were received for treatment at the HAEU, while 2,400 were processed and published. MEP Danuta Hübner was one of the individuals who signed a deposit contract and transferred her files to Florence in 2017.
The HAEU is also making efforts to facilitate digital access to the files in its holdings. Specialized external companies digitized 1,370 archival files on-site at the HAEU which were then made available to the research community.
The Archives has improved its online presence, receiving over 300,000 visits to its website in 2017 compared to 280,000 the year before.
Moreover the HAEU organized a number of activities in 2017 to engage with the public, such as the travelling exhibition “Ever Closer Union”, the annual Open Day and its educational programme. The latter saw 1,000 local students come to the HAEU to learn more about the European Union, its history and written memory preserved at Villa Salviati.
