EUDO - Data on European Democracy
The European Union Democracy Observatory at the European University Institute generates data on democratic practices in Europe, public opinion, political elites, media, political parties, institutional reform and citizenship. EUDO is directed by Prof. Alexander Trechsel (University of Lucerne and EUI).
2019 euandi data was gathered in the months before the May 2019 European Parliment elections. The European Parliament voting device application allowed users "to react to 22 statements covering a wide range of contemporary policy issues and political values in European politics. The results show which parties stand closest to citizens’ preferences, both in their country and all across Europe."
Data is available in the EUI Research Data Collection in the Cadmus repository, and is also archived in the GESIS archive: Study ZA7563 (expert interviews data) and Study ZA7565 (General Population Survey). Documentation is at this link.
In advance of the European Parliament elections of May 2014, EUDO launched euandi - an online voting advice application. The project - successor to the 2009 EU Profiler party positions and user profiles project - was undertaken by Prof. Alexander Trechsel (University of Lucerne; EUI); Prof. Lorenzo De Sio (LUISS University, Rome) and Diego Garzia (EUI) in cooperation with Harvard University.
Party data from the 2014 euandi project is accessible via the EUI Research Data Collection in the Cadmus repository, and is also archived in the GESIS archive, Study ZA5917, with Voter profile data (anonymised) accessible as Study ZA5970.
The euandi data codebook is at this link.
EUDO data are generated by four project observatories: (i) The Observatory on Public Opinion, Political Elites and the Media (ii) The Observatory on Political Parties and Representation (iii) The Observatory on Institutional Change and Reform and (iv) The Observatory on Citizenship.
The euandi dataset collates the positions of political parties (prospectuses) during the 2014 European Parliamentary election; as reflected in 30 statements on:
- Welfare, Family and Health: welfare programmes and taxation, social assistance for EU immigrants, reduction of pension benefits;
- Migration and Immigration: illegal immigration, immigration restriction, acceptance of European values by immigrants;
- Society, Religion and Culture: legalisation of same-sex marriages, support for stem cell research, legalisation of soft drugs, legalisation of euthanasia;
- Finances and Taxes: reduction of government spending, tax-raising powers for EU, taxation on stock market gains;
- Economy and Work: reduction of workers' protection regulation, support for unemployed, relaxation of austerity measures;
- Environment, Transport and Energy: support for renewable sources of energy, promotion of public transport;
- Law and order: restrictions of civil liberties, punishment for criminals; access to abortion;
- Foreign Policy: EU security and defence policy, EU capacity to speak with one voice;
- European Integration: opinion on EU integration, dispositions towards Euro currency / Eurobonds, veto powers of EU member states, referenda on EU matters;
- Country specific topics.
Data from the 2009 EU Profiler voting advice application project is available in the EUI data collection in the Cadmus repository and the GESIS archive (studies ZA5801 to ZA5839). The EU Profiler codebook is at this link.
The project was undertaken under the auspices of EUDO, with an international consortium including Kieskompas (Amsterdam), NCCR Democracy, University of Zurich Zentrum für Demokratie Aarau and Politools.
