Learn more about the Academy

The Academy of European Law (AEL) is a free-standing unit within the Department of Law. The Academy was established in 1990 by Professors Antonio Cassese and Joseph H. H. Weiler. The AEL promotes excellence in teaching and research on European and international themes through its annual summer courses and authors’ workshops, its publications, and its wide range of projects. The Academy also houses the Secretariat of the European Society of International Law.

Academy Summer Courses

The Academy offers two advanced-level courses: Human Rights; The Law of the European Union. Next edition: 16-27 June 2025. (Note: Applications open in February 2025, and are assessed on a rolling basis).

Publications

The publications programme includes the Collected Courses of the Academy of European Law series, based on the Academy summer courses, published by Oxford University Press.

The Academy hosts the Secretariat of the European Society of International Law/ Société européenne de droit international. Staff members at the Secretariat are Walter Ilardi & Maria Grazia Dusina.
