This high-level conference will explore the roles critical stakeholders can play to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy sector in West Africa, with particular attention for climate finance. The open session with two moderated panel discussions will close with a networking cocktail.

Training

6-7 July 2023Accra, Ghana - ACBF training centre

The two-day training programme on financing sustainable energy transitions in Africa targets mid-career and senior professionals in the public and private sectors working on finance and sustainable energy. The EUI will work with Ghana-based organisations to source participants and specifically target participants from other West African countries to ensure the transnational nature of this training.

Africa receives less than 2% of all investments in renewable energy worldwide.

At the same time, Africa is already bearing the worst adverse impacts of climate change, even though it contributed little to the problem.

One of the reasons we do not see the scale-up of assets in Africa’s green transition is the lack of bankable projects that can attract or access adequate financing in the continent.

It is time to advance the conversation on climate finance for a sustainable energy transition in Africa by:

bringing together all key stakeholders around the table to discuss the latest knowledge and new opportunities
building the capacity of mid-career professionals working on finance and sustainable energy in the public and private sector

Professor Kenneth Amaeshi

Professor of Sustainable Finance and Governance at the Florence School of Transnational Governance

The event and training in Ghana are spearheaded by the Florence School of Transnational Governance. The organisational committee is led by Professor Kenneth Amaeshi.

Kenneth Amaeshi's research interest currently focuses on financial market reforms and governance, as well as on sector-level policies for sustainability and sustainability strategy in organisations. Amaeshi has an expert level knowledge of developing and emerging economies. His research has a very strong interface between business and society, particularly national governments in Africa, where he has an extensive network. Since 2015, he has significantly contributed to developing the intellectual foundations of Africapitalism - an economic philosophy for the development of Africa - and championed its mainstreaming in the global academia.

Why the European University Institute?

The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy, houses experts in sustainable finance and governance through its Florence School of Transnational Governance and Florence School of Banking and Finance. The Institute also has expertise in energy via its Florence School of Regulation, which is a key actor in the establishment of the new African School of Regulation.

The EUI Florence School of Transnational Governance also keeps strong ties with its growing and highly influential cohort of alumni of the Young African Leaders Programme financed by the European Commission. The visit to West Africa is an excellent opportunity to reconnect with these alumni and involve them in the proposed activities.
