The EUI celebrated its 50th anniversary with a wide-ranging programme of events centred around one core idea: knowledge must remain at the heart of Europe’s future.

On 8 May 2026, Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic, visited the EUI as part of the celebrations marking the Institute’s 50th anniversary.

EUI 50th anniversary speech by Professor Sabino Cassese

On 7 May 2026, Sabino Cassese delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the EUI’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The address followed his acceptance of the EUI’s inaugural 'Reimagining Europe' Award, which honours members of the EUI community whose work is making a lasting impact across Europe.

Ministerial Summit launches debate on universities’ future role

European ministers, institutional and academic leaders gathered in Florence to mark the EUI's 50th anniversary, launching the Florence Declaration and a Europe-wide debate on the role of universities in shaping Europe’s future.

OPEN

On 8–9 May we inaugurated OPEN, a new exhibition space at Palazzo Buontalenti. Featuring works by six contemporary artists, the exhibition explores the invisible foundations of economic life. OPEN remains accessible on Monday and Saturday afternoons, with guided tours by MUS.E art historians and welcome support from FAI Firenze volunteers.
