The Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) announces the opening of the Andrew Duff fonds. These private papers were deposited in Florence following a deposit agreement signed in 2022 between the HAEU and Mr Duff.

Mr Duff was Director of the Federal Trust in London, President of the Liberal Democrats, and advisor to successive leaders of that party on EU affairs, including on relevant negotiations with the Labour Party. As an elected Member of the European Parliament from 1999-2014, he was a member of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR), and, from 1999, was spokesperson for the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) on Constitutional Affairs.  He held important committee positions throughout his tenure in the EP, and from 2008 and 2013 was President of the Union of European Federalists.

This small fonds comprises 12 files, most of which concern institutional reform of the European Union and, in particular, the emergence of the directly elected European Parliament (EP), the introduction of proportional representation to those elections, and the exceptional position of the UK.

The files may be consulted in the reading room of the HAEU.
