14 December, 2020: Professor Stephanie Hofmann appointed as Joint Chair in International Relations

Professor Stephanie Hofmann of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies will join the EUI in September 2021, as the next Joint Chair in International Relations at the Department of Political and Social Sciences (SPS) and the Robert Schuman Centre. 

2 December, 2020: What Role for the European Parliament in the COVID-19 Crisis?

The Robert Schuman Centre hosted the "What Role for the European Parliament in the COVID-19 Crisis?” webinar as part of the EUI-funded project, “Democracy in Lockdown".

European Parliament members, Jan Olbrycht (MEP, EPP) and Klaus Welle (Secretary General of the European Parliament), and academics, Adrienne Héritier (Emeritus Professor, EUI) and Olivier Rozenberg (Associate Professor, Science Po Paris), discussed how COVID-19 might impact impact parliamentary roles in the long term.

16 November, 2020: The Digital Markets Act: EU Competition Policy at a Crossroads

The European Commission is expected to publish a legislative proposal currently known as Digital Markets Act (DMA) in December 2020. 

The Florence Competition Programme (FCP) and the EU Competition Law and Policy Workshop, organised a joint-event to discuss how this future legislation could be and its impact on EU law.

Daniele Caramani has been appointed as Ernst B. Haas Chair in European Governance and Politics at the Robert Schuman Centre as of 1 September 2020 - a position offered at the European University Institute for the first time. He will lead the European Governance and Politics Programme (EGPP) while being on special leave from the University of Zurich.

18 June 2020: The French-German COVID-19 Recovery Plan

This online debate held by the European University Institute’s Florence School of Banking and Finance introduced and discussed the unprecedented French-German proposal of a grants-based Recovery Plan funded by a European Union borrowing capacity entrusted to the European Commission.

16 June 2020: Commisioner Phil Hogan launches review of European Trade Policy

Bernard Hoekman, coordinator of the RESPECT project, in conversation with Phil Hogan, EU Commissioner for Trade, discussed the details of the Review of European Trade Policy process and how citizens and stakeholders can make their voices to help the Commission formulate the direction of EU trade policy going forward. .

29 May 2020: Transparency for a Time of Crisis and Long-term Growth in the Middle East and North Africa

Daniel Lederman, from the World Bank group, joined the Middle East Directions Programme to discuss the importance of transparency on health and economic data in the MENA region during the Covid-19 crisis, to foster long-term growth.

19 May 2020: Maarten Vink appointed as Chair in Citizenship Studies

Maarten Vink has been appointed to the Chair in Citizenship Studies at the Robert Schuman Centre from 1 September 2020. He will succeed Rainer Bauböck as Director of the ‘Global Citizenship’ research area within the Global Governance Programme (GGP). Maarten will be on special leave from Maastricht University where he is Professor of Political Science with a focus on Political Sociology.

18 May 2020: EU and Trade Policy Coherence at Times of COVID19

On 18 May the RESPECT project, led by Prof. Bernard Hoekman, hosted an online panel which discussed patterns and prospects of trade policy strategies since the COVID19 crisis outbreak. Panellists focused on trade policy responses in Europe, their coherence across EU Member States and EU institutions, their implications for business, and their impact on developing countries.

15 May 2020: Between Crises And Opportunities: The Pandemic’s Implications On The Economic And Energy Sectors In The Broader Mediterranean

The event was part of the Rome 2020 MEDiterranean Dialogues Agenda of Regional Meetings. In partnership with the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale (ISPI), in the context of the European University Institute’s State of the Union.

May 2020: Covid-19 projects

In response to the Covid-19 crisis, EUI launched a competitive selection to promote and fund new research across the humanities and social sciences. Five of the selected projects were proposed by Schuman Centre academics.

31 March 2020: Five EUI researchers receive ERC advanced grants

Five EUI research proposals received funding from the latest ERC call, two of them hosted by the Robert Schuman Centre.

On 31 March 2020, the ERC announced the 185 winners of its annual advanced grants competition. EUI researchers Youssef Cassis, Laura Lee Downs, Anton Hemerijck, Liesbet Hooghe and Glenda Sluga were among the researchers who were awarded five-year grants. Their projects address topics ranging from the memory of financial crises, the history and future of welfare, to polarisation and the economic ideas behind globalisation.

03 March 2020: Glenda Sluga appointed Joint Professor of International History and Capitalism

Professor Sluga will split her time between the Department of History and Civilization and the Robert Schuman Centre. Her work focuses on the intersecting challenges of economics, the environment, and Europe, bridging the gap between social scientists and historians. 
The Australian-Slovenian historian discusses re-writing women into history, and research from the periphery. 

March 2020: Launch of the Differentiation: Clustering Excellence (DiCE) Project

The European Governance and Politics Programme 'Differentiation: Clustering Excellence (DiCE)' project establishes a large, open and inclusive research network designed to ensure that state-of-the-art research on differentiation is translated into policy advice made accessible to policy-makers at European, national and regional levels.

24 Feb 2020: A Differentiated Europe Facing Brexit – What Can We Learn From ‘The Norway Model’? 

Norway’s EU affiliation is generally discussed under the heading of ‘external differentiation’. This very close affiliation is interesting given that the EU membership issue has been one of, if not the, most politically divisive issue in the postwar period. What are the factors and forces sustaining this arrangement? In this presentation, Prof. John Erik Fossum discussed this question with explicit reference to Brexit as well as with regard to the broader question of how the EU handles external forms of differentiation.

January 2020: The Migration Policy Centre OPAM Scientific Hub

The Migration Policy Centre's Observatory of Public Attitudes to Migration (OPAM) has created a new web tool that allows to see the effect of diverse factors on attitudes to immigration: the OPAM Scientific Hub.
