Historical Archives of the European Union

Celebrating 40 years in 2024

The HAEU preserves and makes accessible for research the archives deposited by EU institutions according to the thirty-year rule governing access to archival material. It also collects and preserves private papers of individuals, movements and international organisations involved in European integration. Finally, it facilitates research on the history of the European Union, promotes public interest in European integration and enhances transparency in the functioning of EU Institutions.

New volume celebrates forty years of access and preservation

To mark its fortieth anniversary, the Historical Archives of the European Union has curated a volume showcasing selected archival documents on European integration. The book also illustrates the Archives’ work in conserving and making these documents accessible to the public.

2024 Visegrad Fellow examines European Union consumer protection

Dr Slobodan Vukadinović received an International Visegrad Fund research grant in 2024 to consult primary sources at the Historical Archives. The fellowship permitted him to examine the emergence of consumer protection law in the European Union.

Eastern enlargement on display at Palazzo Buontalenti

An archival exhibition installed at Palazzo Buontalenti traces out the steps towards the Eastern enlargement, and pays tribute to the role of Bronisław Geremek in Poland’s accession. The exhibit was developed by the Historical Archives of the European Union with the Council of the European Union.

New European Investment Bank files available for online consultation

362 files transferred from the European Investment Bank to the Historical Archives of the European Union are now available for online consultation. The files include documents concerning the Bank’s governance, as well as contract files from over 100 projects financed by the Bank between 1971 and 1975.

Europe and Europeans 1950>2020: 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration

2020 marks the 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, a short but powerful statement made by the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, on the 9th of May 1950. The declaration, drafted by Jean Monnet and pronounced by Schuman, initiated the process of European integration with its vision of a joint French and German coal and steel production.
