Visit and Lecture by Wolfgang Schäuble, German Minister of Finance
On 7 March 2012 Wolfgang Schäuble, German Minister of Finance, visited the EUI and spoke on ‘Europe: Economic and Institutional Perspectives’, within the ambit of the Debating Europe initiative. In his talk, Minister Schäuble traced the European integration project from its beginnings at the Messina Conference to the current situation, and reflected on Europe’s need for a unifying narrative and identity to further the integration process. He also touched upon how the Union could increase its legitimacy, as well as the challenges it faces in creating a real, functioning economic and monetary union.
In the subsequent debate, moderated by EUI Professor Elena Carletti, Minister Schäuble fielded questions on the role of Germany and the policies and challenges in fighting the current Eurozone crisis. Participants also raised issues concerning European solidarity, austerity programmes, and divergences in economic competitiveness across the Eurozone.
Minister Schäuble also met with German professors and researchers from the Institute during the course of his visit, and was presented with a statement prepared by some of the researchers on the current challenges of the European Union.
