On Wednesday 22 March, the EUI signed an Association Agreement with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. The Agreement provides for four doctoral grants sponsored by the Russian Federation, plus a new chair in social sciences. The EUI will fund the fourth year of the grant. The parts were represented by Sergei Ivanets, Deputy Minister of Education and Science, and Josep Borrell, President of the European University Institute.
In his speech, Deputy-Minister Ivanets explained the importance and value of this type of an agreement for the Russian Federation. It is aimed to encourage student mobility and expose Russian researchers to new academic perspectives in a time when scientific research has become globally interconnected. Ivanets also expressed his hopes that the Russian doctorates will return to Russia so that they can apply their European formation in home institutions.
This is the first time that the Russian Government has proposed such a long-term association with regard to international training in higher education.
