Biography

Nicolas Berman expects to earn Ph.D. in Economics in 2008 from the University Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, under the supervision of Professor. Philippe Martin. Previously to his Ph.D. studies, he gained a BA in Applied Economics from University Paris IX-Dauphine, and in Applied Mathematics from the University Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne. During his PhD, he was also a visiting scholar at the CREST-INSEE and at the French Central Bank.
His main fields of interest are international trade and international macroeconomics, with a particular focus on the interactions between financial market imperfections and exchange rate movements on trade. An important part of his PhD thesis shows that the existence of financial market imperfections modifies the impact of exchange rate movements on trade, and is likely to explain a part of the ‘exchange rate disconnect puzzle’, i.e. the apparent disconnection between nominal exchange rate variation and real macroeconomic variables. One aspect of his current work uses firm-level data to shed new light on the impact of exchange rate movements on trade, and on the role of the extensive margin of trade (firms’ entry-exit behaviour) on macroeconomic adjustment.

Nicolas Berman has taught courses in International Trade, International Finance, Trade Policy at BA and Master levels.
