I defended my Ph.D. in April 2011 and was awarded a cum laude distinction. In my dissertation I studied the relationship between law, practice and convention in the constitution of the European Union, for example in the areas of qualified majority decision making in the Council, the Commission investiture, decision making on EU public finance and the ordinary legislative procedure. I included a theoretical and factual analysis of both law and political practice, benefiting from interviews with European and national politicians, officials and diplomats. As a lecturer, I have taught courses in European law, international and European institutional law and constitutional law. I am an Editor of the European Constitutional Law Review (Asser/CUP). Between 2011 and 2012 I worked for the Legal Service of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an advisor on European law. In general, my research interests include the relationship between law and politics, as well as the constitutional law of the European Union. Since I joined the EUI in 2012, my research focuses on the constitutional development of the EU's economic and monetary union as a result of the Euro zone crisis.
