Biography

My main interests lie in the history of Western Europe since 1945, and in particular the links between the European integration process and the Cold War period. I completed my Ph.D. at the London School of Economics in January 2012, and until recently I held a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University.
Based on a broad spectrum of archival material from the EEC institutions and British, French, German, Irish, US and Greek government records, my dissertation, “Greece's road to EEC membership, 1974-1979: The View from Brussels” takes a Community-centred approach that highlights on what grounds and with what methods the Community and its institutions as a whole responded to the challenges posed by the Greek candidature. This study provisionally entitled 'Greece, the EEC and the Cold War 1974-1979' is due to appear next year with Palgrave Macmillan.
I will use the Max Weber Fellowship to pursue my research project, ‘USA, Europe and the transition to democracy in Southern Europe'. The collapse of authoritarianism in Greece and Portugal in 1974, Franco’s eclipse in Spain in 1975 and the rise of the Communist’s appeal in Italy in 1975-6 drastically changed the political landscape in Western Europe. The proposed project seeks to investigate the evolution of the relationship between the United States and the EEC in coping with the Southern European crisis in the turbulent years from 1974 to 1976.
