Biography

Karl Murphy was awarded his PhD from Dublin City University in March 2018. His doctoral dissertation was entitled ‘Why Trilogues? Determinants of the use of informal negotiations in EU codecision-making processes 1999-2016’. He holds an MA (1:1) in European Politics and Governance from the University of Limerick.

His research interests include European Union institutions, particularly the role of the European Parliament in forming legislation; formal and informal decision making in the EU; democracy and transparency. He is also keenly interested in research methods, particularly mixed-methods. He has recently published a pedagogical student aid ‘Nested Analysis: Identifying and Applying Qualitative Illustration Support for Logistic Regression Models’ with Sage Publications.

Karl’s research target during the fellowship is to progress with a new project examining the effectiveness of the European Parliament under both formal and informal forms of codecision, and as well as this, to work towards transforming his PhD into a book. He will also work towards the publication of two other articles, which will be under review by the autumn of 2019.

Since the autumn of 2017, Karl has held lecturing positions at Dublin City University, the National University of Ireland Maynooth, and the Technological University Dublin where he has taught over a dozen modules at the BA and MA level. These modules include EU Integration; Comparative European Politics; Political Ideology; Irish Politics and Economics; Irish Foreign Policy; International Political Economy; Political Structures; Political Communication; and Contemporary American Business and Society.
