Biography

Télio Cravo is a historian with an interest in the Transatlantic slave trade, abolitionism and slavery in the nineteenth century. He completed his PhD in October 2018 at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP). His thesis focused on the experiences of enslaved, freedmen, liberated Africans, and immigrants in road construction in nineteenth-century Brazil. Prior to joining the EUI Max Weber Programme, he worked as a resident researcher at Brasiliana Mindlin Library at the University of São Paulo (USP) and served on the committee of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil (1822).

His postdoctoral project at the EUI will build on his previous research and investigate how global connections arose from the Transatlantic slave trade, slavery, British mining companies and the activities of foreign engineers in the largest slave province of the Brazilian Empire. These aspects reflect his interest in the methodological challenges of global history.

Télio plans to use his time at the EUI to further analyze the impact of British gold mining companies in Brazil regarding the Transatlantic slave trade, highlighting the intensity and degree of economic and cultural interconnectedness. One of his objectives is to contribute to further our understanding of abolitionism turned into government and imperial policies.

Télio has teaching experience of undergraduate courses in Economic History.
