Biography

Tomás Bartoletti earned his PhD from the University of Buenos Aires. He read Latin American Literature and Linguistics at the University of Buenos Aires and History of Science and Technology at the University of Quilmes (Argentina). Between 2019 and 2021, Tomás was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich. He has been Researcher in the Gotha Research Centre (2019), the University of Erfurt (2017-2018) and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (2014-2016). He has published articles in journals, like Comparative Studies in Society and History, Global Intellectual History, and HAU: Journal of Ethnographic Theory. An exhibition coming out of his research, Naming Natures, is planned to take place in 2024.

His research interests include the history of science and empire, the history of capitalism, environmental history, and the global histories of Latin America, Germany, and Switzerland. Tomás is working on two projects: the history of pest control and commodity frontiers in the Global South, c. 1880-1930; and the history of Swiss science in Latin America during the 19th century. In these projects, Tomás explores the methodological intersections of material culture and transdisciplinary research, while integrating comprehensively indigenous perspectives.

At ETH Zürich Tomás taught seminars on global histories of the Anthropocene and history of Swiss museums. He lectured at the Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona) and the EUI about informal empires, global and Latin American histories.
