The contribution deals with the question of possible effects of educational systems on achievement of (migrant) children and social and ethnic inequality. The main focus are some controversial results and political conclusions for two different approaches by educational economists (like Hanushek and Wößmann) on the one hand and a group of educational sociologists (like Dronkers, Dunne and Van der Velden) on the other (for analyses of PISA-data in the last 10 years). The core is a theoretical reconstruction of the separation of sorting and contextual effects and an evaluation of merits and pitfalls of the two approaches in comparison to each other. The contribution concludes with a judgement of what we can learn from PISA-studies about educational systems effects / and what not.
