SPS alumna Angela Liberatore is the new Head of the Science Department at ERCEA
As Head of Department, Liberatore oversees the five units in the Agency that deal with Ethics Review and Expert Management; Call and Project Follow-up Coordination; Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering; and Social Sciences and Humanities, the latter of which she is the former Head of Unit.
“It is a great responsibility and pleasure to lead the Scientific Department of ERCEA with its ‘dream team’ of over 200 highly talented and dedicated colleagues. I will do so in the spirit of the ‘whole science approach’ of ERC with social sciences and humanities, life sciences, and physical sciences and engineering all having their space. After all, I have a philosophy and social sciences background (with a PhD ‘made in Europe’ at the EUI) and take over from a great theoretical physicist in doing our best to help frontier research keep flourishing!’, says Liberatore.
Dr Liberatore defended her PhD in the EUI's Department of Political and Social Sciences in 1992. She has previously worked in the Commission's Directorate-General for Research and Innovation in the International Cooperation programme, the Social Sciences and Humanities, and the Environment programme. She participated in the EC work on the White Paper on European Governance and the negotiation of the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change, and has also taught at the Institute for European Studies in Brussels.
