Italy and the world

Posted on 16 May 2016
Learn more about Italy's place in the world this week: on Wednesday 18 May watch the documentary 'Italy today: finally global?' in the company of an Italian historian; on Saturday 21 May, walk with an Italian poet along the paths that have inspired - and continue to inspire - artists from all over the world.

On Wednesday evening, come to the Emeroteca, Badia Fiesolana, at 18:00 where Italian historian, Simone Testa, will reveal whether Italy has 'finally gone global'. For more information read What do we speak about when we speak about Italy? (PDF) This lecture is in English and there is no need to enrol.  Just turn up!

On Saturday morning, Tuscan poet and Italian teacher, Annarita Zacchi, will accompany you on a three-hour walk to Villa il Palmerino. Once home to Vernon Lee and frequented by many artists of the likes of Berenson, Aldous Huxley and Anatole France, to name but a few, this historic residence is now a vibrant Cultural Association which continues to attract contemporary artists.

Over a Tuscan afternoon tea, the owners of Villa il Palmerino will tell you tales of guests of the nineteenth century, and we will read some of Vernon Lee's verses.

For more information (in Italian) you can read the third description in the attached document, Il Palmerino, crocevia di artisti a Firenze.  If you wish to participate, write to [email protected]. The meeting point is the No.7 busstop, near the newspaper kiosk, in Piazza Edison, at 10.30.
