If you meet the nationality or residency requirements to be eligible for Dutch student finance you must attach the required documentation (evidence of the nationality or residency requirements) to your EUI Application. To do this, please use the passport/ID attachment field of the EUI Online Application form.
Eligibility Criteria
In addition to the general EUI application criteria, to be eligible for a Dutch EUI grant you must meet the following eligibility criteria:
Minimum academic requirements
You must have successfully obtained a doctoral diploma or Master’s degree.
EUI admission
You must be admitted to the EUI doctoral programme to which you applied.
Nationality/residence requirements
You must meet the nationality/residence requirements for Dutch student finance (apart from the age and study programme criteria) as defined by DUO at the time of your EUI application:
- You are a Dutch national or you have a residence permit type II, III, IV or V: You must submit a copy of a valid Dutch passport or ID-card (front and back) or copy of your residence permit (front and back) with your EUI application depending on which is applicable.
- You have EU/EEA or Swiss nationality: For receiving student finance you must meet 1 of the following conditions:
- You have lived in the Netherlands for 5 consecutive years or more.
- You are a migrant worker. You work at least 32 hours per month in the Netherlands or you have a monthly income of at least 50% of the social security benefit level (bijstandsnorm).
- Your parent or partner has the nationality of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland and is or was a migrant worker. Your parent or partner works at least 32 hours per month in the Netherlands, or your parent or partner has or had a monthly income of at least 50% of the social security benefit level (bijstandsnorm).
Migrant workers must be employed in the Netherlands for at least one year prior to the EUI application deadline. This also applies to applicants whose partner is employed in the Netherlands.
You can check whether you are eligible for Dutch student finance on the DUO website. The requirements for both residents with -and without a residence permit are indicated on their website, including the documentation needed to support eligibility.
The information on the DUO website takes precedence in case of any discrepancies between the information stated above and the DUO webpage.
Submit the documents to support eligibility with your EUI application using the passport/ID attachment field of the EUI Online Application form.
Dual nationality
If you hold dual nationality (Dutch and another nationality) and you meet one of the criteria as shown above, you also meet the nationality requirement for the scholarship.
Eligibility is carefully verified for each applicant. Applications that do not meet the criteria or fail to provide sufficient proof of eligibility will not be taken into further consideration.

The Authority provides a monthly grant for the first three years of EUI Ph.D. Programme. The fourth year is covered by the EUI: 2025 grant is 1.620 € per month, in addition to other allowances and a complementary top-up contribution of the Grant Authority. You are advised to also carefully read all the information on the website of the grant authority. There you will also find the obligations and conditions that apply to the grant.
