Speakers will bring their own knowledge and expertise to bear on the shaping of a conversation on different aspects of early modern global history, placing Carletti’s My Voyage Around the World at the centre.
At each meeting three 10 minute informal presentations will be followed by an open discussion among participants.
The Chinese Atlas today at the National Library in Florence is the only material artefact that we are sure belonged to Francesco Carletti. Yet his entire work can be seen as an attempt at mapping new global geographies. What did Carletti observe? How did he imagine and experience global space? And why were maps so important for him?
Presentations by Lia Markey (Newberry Library); Kären Wigen (Stanford University); and Alexander Statman (UW-Madison).
