The talk introduces global diplomatic history as an alternative approach to the study of the connected histories of capitalism. It departs from diplomatic practices in maritime Southeast Asia during the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Exchange and collaboration between local polities and European powers advanced in a pluralistic, multi-centric, open geography despite colonial coercion and local resistance against it. However, little is known about the people who shaped the very practices of negotiations and communication in asymmetrical settings. Responding to the need to nuance the image of diplomatic actors, the study traces indigenous and underrepresented voices in negotiation processes. In a further step suggests way to progresses actor-based diplomatic history, for instance by incorporating insights from material and intellectual history.
