This paper identifies the salient features of Union citizenship as they emerge from the case law of the Court of Justice and attempts to locate it in the wider citizenship discourse. Union citizenship is an autonomous source of rights (Zambrano) and a necessary part of the autonomy model.

The European Union Law WG is delighted to announce its reactivation with the generous support of Professor Urška Šadl.

This WG is an initiative of new researchers from the EUI Department of Law who are working on various topics related to EU law. It aims to create a forum for interdisciplinary discussions on the specific characteristics of the EU legal structure which set it apart from other international bodies, ranging from its institutional arrangements, the procedure and case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union to the unique European integration process. We are open to all who are interested in these issues and wish to join and participate in our events.

Our guest speaker for the event is Professor Takis Tridimas, Professor of European Law and Co-Director of the Centre of European Law at King’s College London. He will discuss the issue of EU citizenship, a fundamental concept of the European integration process which has been subject to pressure from various sources in- as well as outside the Union in recent years.

Speaker(s):

Prof. Takis Tridimas (Kingʼs College London)
