Data governance in the EU
The European Data Strategy paper launched in February 2020 by the European Commission ambitiously introduced the concept of data spaces, enhancing the challenging idea of creating an effective data collaboration between the public and private sectors. The document clearly shows the priority assigned to individuals' interests and fundamental rights, data sovereignty, and compliance with EU rules. Recently, the Commission also welcomed the political agreement reached between the European Parliament and the EU Member States on a European Data Governance Act. This talk will reflect on how we define data governance from a political and technical perspective, how these two aspects are closely related, and are critical and crucial elements of data sharing policies.
Cross-border data flows and data privacy standards for digital platforms
The expansion of digital firms is leading to significant cross-border data flows. Along with the processing of the latter, privacy issues arise. Many countries have strict privacy rules for data processing, including the EU GDPR.
This presentation will focus on privacy standards applicability and their effect on digital platforms.
The event will be moderated by STG Adjunct Professor Andrea Renda, Senior Research Fellow and Head of the CEPS Unit on Global Governance, Regulation, Innovation and the Digital Economy (GRID)
