In this seminar, Pedro Martín will present the paper “Social Movements and Preferences for Redistribution: A Public Opinion Study."

Please note that the session starts at 17:15.

The pauperisation of lower-middle classes and the increasing concerns around economic inequalities pose a challenge to scholars and policymakers. The Great Recession and the implementation of austerity policies in Europe have been coupled with rising protests focused on economic issues, labelled as ‘new’ new social movements. Recent scholarship work has highlighted the effect of protests on many political outcomes, from public opinion change to voting behaviour. However, the evidence relating to social movements with economic demands and their impact on the redistributive preferences of public opinion is scarce. The present study aims to fill this gap by incorporating social movements perspectives into the field of preferences for redistribution. I argue that social movements can affect public redistributive demands, a key element of individuals’ ideology and vote choice.
