One important indicator of women’s power is their level of representation in academia and scientific research more widely. A variety of gender-influenced factors – social norms, social structures, political and economic institutions, and individual behaviour – combine to explain why women are less likely to advance in academic careers than men. How do we eliminate the most immediate obstacles that hinder women’s empowerment? What systemic leverages can we collectively target to improve gender equality in academia? What can women scholars do to avoid gender driven traps? What are the most damaging and most frequent behaviours those persons in positions of power should be aware of and avoid? These are some of the leading questions that will guide the debate.
The purpose of this event is to raise awareness on how women’s choice architecture in academia is limited compared to that of their male colleagues. Policy interventions on how to tackle such challenges will be advanced. We intend to create a safe space for conversation, establish contacts across career stages and disciplines and learn from each other. The event is open for participation to all EUI researchers, faculty, and staff of all genders. The participation of our male colleagues is warmly welcome.
The two hour event is organised by the Max Weber Women Scholar Network with the support of Professor Klarita Gërxhani and the EUI’s Dean of Diversity, Neha Jain. Max Weber fellows will initiate a data driven conversation on the most pressing themes related to women’s participation in academia and research. They will guide open debates, share personal experiences and connect with all interested members of the EUI community.
The event will be followed by a cocktail at the Lower Loggia. Attendance restricted to registered participants. Please confirm that you wish to attend the cocktail by writing to [email protected].
