This event is the third conference in visual and material culture studies. The second day of the conference is held entirely online and welcomes Dr Emma Gleadhill, a social and cultural historian based in Sydney, to discuss her first academic monograph to be published with Manchester University Press in April 2022, Taking travel home: the souvenir culture of British women tourists, 1750-1830. The book provides a new cultural history of the travel souvenir. It uncovers how eighteenth-century British women enlisted the objects they collected during their travels to realise their ambitions in the arenas of connoisseurship, science and friendship. It argues for the souvenir as a significant site of contestation over the legitimacy of the male and female experience of travel. Please register in order to receive the ZOOM link.
