Lindsey Kingston problematizes the assumption that legal nationality is always a social good and argues that state citizenship – the assumed marker of political membership in our world system – can be weaponized as a tool of repression and erasure, as well as utilized as a bargaining chip for social control. The weaponization of citizenship raises important questions about the nature and value of state citizenship, including whether global society is shifting away from understanding legal nationality as a right and instead viewing it as a privilege.
