The EUI Ukraine Solidarity Initiative hosts a roundtable discussion on the effects of the invasion of Ukraine for Russian State and Society.

Abstract

In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin has implemented the most severe state censorship laws since the USSR and intensified state propaganda. In the last few weeks, a number of security service officers have been arrested, a government climate envoy resigned, and top oligarchs have criticised the invasion. Meanwhile, Western sanctions against Russia are some of the toughest, leading to an increase in basic food prices, withdrawal of foreign investment, and supply chain issues. How does this affect the Russian State and Civil Society? What consequences does this have for President Putin’s ability to stay in power and what can be expected from the Russian opposition? These questions will be discussed in this round-table, organised by the Ukrainian Month Initiative at the European University Institute.

All interested fellows, PhD researchers, professors, visiting academics and staff are invited to participate. The event is open to the general public. Please register for the event by Thursday, 7th of April. The zoom link will be shared with registered participants prior to the event.
