Today's high level conversation features Muthoni Wanyeki and Emmanuel Bombande, who will discuss the role of civil society in Africa in relation to peacebuilding and conflict mediation.
Muthoni Wanyeki is the regional director of the Open Society Foundations’ Africa Regional Office. Prior to this, she served as a member and chair of the Open Society Justice Initiative’s advisory board. Before joining the Open Society Foundations, Wanyeki was Amnesty International’s regional director for East Africa, the Horn, and the Great Lakes (2014-17). She served as executive director of the Kenya Human Rights Commission (2007-11), and executive director of the African Women’s Development and Communication Network (1999-2006). She has served as an advisor/board member for many organisations, including the African Leadership Centre of King’s College London and the University of Nairobi. She was a columnist for the East African, (2003-18) and is now a columnist for the East African Review.
Mr. Bombande has served as a Senior Mediation Adviser with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Central African Republic He is currently a Senior Mediation Adviser with the Standby Team of the Mediation Support Unit of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, United Nations. He served in Government as Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic of Ghana. His political experience at the Ministry included providing political oversight to critical managerial decision-making processes as well as Ghana’s representation to important multilateral ministerial conferences and summits. He led Ghana’s delegation to the 16th Summit of La Francophonie in Antananarivo – Madagascar in November 2016. He represented Ghana at Ministerial level in COP 22, Marrakesh amongst other assignments of Ghana’s representation.
The event is part of the Africa's Potential series, carried out at the School of Transnational Governance, as part of the Young African Leaders Programme (YALP) funded by the European Commission, and is open to the EUI community, YALP alumni and the YALP network.
