The workshop provides a practical and cross-discipline introduction to decolonising teaching practices in higher education. It discusses tools to create and promote equitable classroom experiences and is specifically directed at people who are just about to transition into teaching roles.
In the first hour of the workshop Dr. Stephanie Davis will present her thoughts on "Disrupting coloniality: conspiring for decolonial possibilities in the neo-liberal University". The talk will focus on the challenges and the opportunities in doing this work and it will also address some of the tensions involved in it. There will be participatory elements throughout this session and time for questions and discussion at the end as well. This part of the event is also open for online participation.
The ensuing workshop will dwell further on the challenges opportunities and tensions. Smaller groups will address questions such as: How can one apply the ideas of decolonisation when organizing classroom discussions? How do we approach teaching topics such as colonialism, imperialism, and migration from the perspective of a decolonial classroom? And how can these approaches be brought into hybrid or online teaching? After having explored these issues by way of engaging in various activities the insights will be brought back together in the overall group. This part of the event is only for in-person participants.
