The war in Ukraine has crystallised profound changes in the global order, and the shape of the new order is far from self-evident. This event will explore and debate the emerging shape of this new landscape and the relevance of the values, rules and institutions as the foundation for global order.

The war in Ukraine has crystallised profound changes in the global order, but, though the Pax Americana has passed, the contours of the new geopolitical landscape have yet to be clearly drawn. Some imagine a world define by Sino-American rivalry, others a broader confrontation between democracies and autocracies and others still a multipolar world in which second-tier powers play a pivotal role. Post-Ukraine, the Global South seems reluctant to take sides. Will it sit on the fence? More fundamentally, the space for rules and values, and the role of spheres of influence, in the international system look uncertain.

This event will explore and debate the emerging shape of this new landscape and of the relevance or otherwise of the values, rules and institutions that defined the post-World War 2 order. If the nations of the world can still sign up to basic shared principles such as sovereignty and territorial integrity is there room also for values such as freedom and democracy?

The event will be held in two parts. The first session (from 14.00-15.45) will focus on the emerging shape of the new world (dis) order. The second session (from 16.00-17.45) will focus on a discussion on Values or interests? The western order and the global south.

The event will be held in Elinor Ostrom in Palazzo Buontalenti and online. All are welcome to attend. To join the event, please register.
