In this lecture, Christa Hämmerle (University of Vienna), renowned historian of gender and the First World War, will discuss her research on political debates about and personal experiences of compulsory military service in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Christa Hämmerle will present some of the main arguments she put forward in her recently published monograph Ganze Männer? Gesellschaft, Geschlecht und Allgemeine Wehrpflicht in Österreich-Ungarn (1868-1914).

The study examines how the Austro-Hungarian military system established in 1868 shaped societal structures and dynamics, in particular with regard to processes of militarization and patterns and practices of masculinity. Following Hämmerle’s presentation HEC researchers Sven Mörsdorf and Louisa Niesen and Professor Pieter Judson will share their comments on the book, before the floor is opened for questions from the audience. The language of the event is English.
