Authoritarianism has become the new game in town through its resurgence all around the world. The rise of China and its increasing engagement with the authoritarian regimes bring the question of whether it has a role in increasing autocratisation. Such a question brought the external dimension of authoritarianism into the analyses that focus on authoritarian diffusion and cooperation as well as autocracy promotion. However, the literature has a theoretical gap for that matter, and this article aims to fill this gap by providing a theoretical framework for autocracy support and exploring the case of Chinese autocracy support in Serbia. It argues that combinations of leverage and linkage lead to different outcomes for autocracy support. Furthermore, China has an intensive but unintentional and indirect autocracy support in Serbia.
