Affective polarisation is the mutual antipathy between different political camps in society. Several aspects about this phenomenon, especially in multiparty systems, still remain unexplored. In this RSC seminar series, Andres Reiljan, Max Weber Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre, will shed light on the relationship between affective polarisation and another highly central phenomenon in current political science research: far-right populism. He demonstrates that a systematic 'far-right penalty' is present in most European countries, as these parties are significantly more disliked by the supporters of other parties than vice versa. His analysis reveals that this asymmetrical polarisation cannot be explained solely by the ideological extremity of the far right populist parties and attitudes towards democracy and elite behaviour needs to be considered as well to disentangle the puzzle.
