How can the EU be made legitimate and sustainable through (constitutional) law? And what is the role of constitutional lawyers and their ideas in creating this "sense of legitimacy"? In Jan Komárek’s edited volume, European Constitutional Imaginaries: Between Ideology and Utopia, published earlier this year, twenty authors grabble with various aspects of these questions utilising the concept of constitutional imaginaries understood as a sets of ideas and beliefs that help to motivate and justify the practice of government and collective self-rule. These imaginaries are important as they impact in very direct ways the kinds of actions political actors can take in the European space.
