In this week’s session on Africa’s Potential, Alex de Waal will discuss with us partnerships for peace and strong institutions in Africa.
Alex De Waal is Executive Director of the World Peace Foundation and Research Programme Director with the Conflict Research Programme at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He also contributes to CPAID research at the Firoz Lalji Centre for Africa. Alex de Waal is one of the foremost experts on Sudan, South Sudan, and the Horn of Africa with particular reference to humanitarian crisis and response, conflict, mediation and peacebuilding. He has served with the African Union mediation team on Darfur and as an advisor to the African Union High Level Implementation Panel for Sudan. His latest book is Mass Starvation: The History and Future of Famine (Polity Press 2017). He is also the author of The Real Politics of the Horn of Africa (Polity Press, 2015). Following a fellowship with the Global Equity Initiative at Harvard (2004-2006), he worked with the Social Science Research Council as Director of the program on HIV/AIDS and Social Transformation, and led projects on conflict and humanitarian crises in Africa (2006-2009). He was on the list of Foreign Policy’s 100 most influential public intellectuals in 2008 and Atlantic Monthly’s 27 brave thinkers in 2009.
The event is part of the Africa's Potential series, carried out at the School of Transnational Governance, as part of the Young African Leaders Programme (YALP) funded by the European Commission, and is open to the EUI community, YALP alumni and the YALP network.
