This high-level workshop takes stock of the 2024 European elections and their aftermath, with a view to contextualizing them in the history of the European Parliament (EP).
On Thursday 17 October, the workshop will kick off with a roundtable discussion by former officials and members of the European Parliament. The topic will be current developments in EU politics, focusing especially on the role of the European Parliament.
Panel II will address the EP’s executive accountability in historical perspective, in the context of the debate about the source of executive power in the EU.
On Friday 18 October, panel III will focus on the election of the Commission’s president, situating current developments in the history of the appointment of the Commission, which involved long and sometimes conflictual negotiations between the European Council, Member States and the European Parliament.
Panel IV will conclude the two-day workshop by focusing on voters’ choices in European elections, and on the relations amongst political groups in the European Parliament over time.
