We welcome Professor John Tasioulas (University of Oxford) to deliver the Chair on Artificial Intelligence and Democracy’s Annual Lecture 2025.

Much of the current discussion on AI and its impact on democracy is understandably negative in character. Indeed, discussions on how AI worsens political polarisation, spreads misinformation and disinformation, and increases economic inequality – issues that pose significant challenges to democratic culture – are numerous.

In his lecture, Professor Tasioulas will offer a more optimistic perspective, arguing that the roots of democratic struggles extend beyond the risks posed by AI. He will explore how, when responsibly developed and applied, AI has the potential to renew democratic systems at a time when public trust in democratic governance is alarmingly low.

Professor John Tasioulas is a Professor of Ethics and Legal Philosophy at the University of Oxford, Director of the Institute for Ethics in AI, and a Senior Research Fellow at Balliol College. A renowned philosopher, he has authored over 70 articles in moral, legal, and political philosophy.

All are welcome to attend. Please register to confirm your attendance. Following the event, participants are invited to join a reception with light refreshments.
