The talk takes as its starting point one of the spaces from whence modernity emerged: the cinema. It focuses on films from across the 20th century that aimed at preventing diseases. Cinematic sexual health education circulated within and between Europe and the USA. Tracing the genealogy of this widespread, political and visual media, the talk will discuss the techniques of governing the self which it involved and the changes in attitudes, behaviours, actions, and emotional repertoires it effected in various in societies.
About the speaker:
Anja Laukötter is Professor for Cultural History at the University of Jena. Her fields of expertise include the history of ethnological museums and (post)colonialism, history of science, media and emotions. Together with Christian Bonah, she edited Body, Capital & Screens. Visual Media and the Healthy Self in the 20th Century in 2020.
