This lecture will take stock of the field of gender and colonialism as it has developed in the last almost 50 years. What has the field accomplished? What have been its limitations? What are some of the ways forward? Professor Mrinalini Sinha will draw largely from her own area of expertise -- the history of colonial India -- to reflect on these questions. The need for a retrospective is perhaps especially apposite now because of the following paradox: While feminist historiography has succeeded in so far as it has made gender an almost ubiquitous category of analysis in many different fields of study, it has been less successful in finding an equal place for itself among the much touted historiographical "turns" of the last several decades. Her talk will attempt to address this paradox and offer some thoughts on new directions. Please register to get a seat.
