Differentiated integration has been a permanent feature of the EU political and legal system for decades. Despite the slow process of EU integration hampered by numerous factors, this approach would still afford the Union transformative power and a strong presence in the Western Balkans. The latest proposals by the European Commission to promote a Growth Plan for the Balkans, tying investments with rule of law reforms, and preparing the region for participation in the single market are important steps in this direction. Marko Milenkovic explores the existing (differentiated) integration trajectories and possible options for the Western Balkans by enhanced involvement in EU policies under the current treaties. In the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the seminar seeks to contribute to the debate on future (non)membership options for the region.
