The STG Talks, held weekly at Badia Fiesolana and online, serve as a space for discussion for the STG community and beyond. Led by the STG Fellows, the talks are a place for informal learning and exchange on global issues affecting different areas of policymaking.

After the ratification of the Istanbul Convention in 2012, Turkey adopted Act No.6284 to Protect Family and Prevent Violence Against Women, thanks to the extensive participation of the women’s movement organisations forming the End Violence Platform. The self-organised platform established itself after the first meeting held by the Ministry in September in 2012, and it took an active and essential part in the law drafting process. This process not only signified a concrete achievement in struggling against gender-based violence in Turkey, but it also offers a universal lens to explore how the involvement of social movements in policymaking processes impacts successful policy.

Participants joining this STG Talk will take part in an interactive workshop to explore how the practices of cooperation among activists and the reimagination of deliberative democracy instruments can influence electoral bodies and shift power dynamics in existing and fragile democracies.
