The STG Talks, held weekly at Badia Fiesolana and online, serve as a space for discussion for the STG community and beyond. Led by the STG Fellows, the talks are a place for informal learning and exchange on global issues affecting different areas of policymaking.

The 1950 Robert Schuman Declaration aimed at making the war between Europe’s historic rivals not merely unthinkable, but materially impossible . Today, the realities of war are back in Europe following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This external threat to the European project is accompanied by internal forces – autocracy's Trojan horses – which undermine the democratic foundations of the European Union.

While democracy lies at the core of the European integration, it remains largely detached from security strategies either on the EU or member states levels. Without preserving democracy as a foundation for peaceful cooperation among European states in Europe, the peace and security on the continent could be unsustainable.

The Talk will discuss why democracy is important to sustain security on the continent. During the talk, Policy Leader Fellow Wojciech Bialozyt, will present results of his research conducted during his fellowship, including theoretical concepts behind the relevancy of democracy for European security, EU policy shift on democracy following the outbreak of the war as well as the changing discourses on democracy of key EU leaders and countries. The results will drive a conversation with the distinguished speakers on EU’s internal policies on democracy and security and their theoretical approaches and discuss external EU policies on democracy and security and their practical approaches.
