Book abstract: In this book, Olivier Roy rejects the culture war thesis and argues that what is at crisis is the very notion of culture, which he perceives as reduced to a system of explicit, decontextualised, and often globalised codes. These forces invade universities like our kitchens. He speaks of global deculturation and, based on the four major contemporary mutations (the liberation of morals since the 1960s, the Internet revolution, neoliberal commodification, and the end of the nation-state), examines their mechanisms and effects. This critical work explores the role of norms and codified standards amongst basic but fundamental questions, including modernism, individualism, language, and faith.
