A seminar on Russian propaganda in foreign policy, countering disinformation, and communication strategies in the MENA region.

This event is a joint EUI-EP seminar, in partnership with Brand Ukraine and MFA of Ukraine in the framework of EUI-EP Partnership and the DG EXPO Electoral Break Training, with the support of the EUI Widening Europe Programme.

Russia, in its competition with the liberal world for establishing the dominant discourse—alongside hard power military means—deploys soft power, resorts to instruments of disinformation and propaganda, leveraging the allure of illiberal values to forge foreign policy alliances, undermine the credibility of international institutions and reshape the global order. What the future world will look like depends on the outcome of the competition of ideas and values, which is unfolding more and more intensively between authoritarian states and liberal democracies.

During this seminar, speakers will focus on the topics of Russian ideology, narratives and propaganda as foreign policy instruments. In addition, they will share their case-studies of communications projects which contributed to counter disinformation narratives and present insights into effective communication notably in the MENA region from research on disinformation narratives in Arabic-speaking media.

This seminar is upon invitation only.

The EUI Widening Europe Programme initiative, backed by contributions from the European Union and EUI Contracting States, is designed to strengthen internationalisation, competitiveness, and quality in research in Widening countries, and thus foster a more cohesive European Higher Education and Research area.
