Among the books that have shaped the understanding of "populism," one in particular has recently resurfaced as a compass for navigating our times. For many, Norman Cohn’s classic, The Pursuit of the Millennium (1957) still illuminates modern phenomena as the 6 January insurrection or the protest movements led by charismatic spokesmen for "the people." This talk revisits this book in the light of its current popularity and suggests its status unravels once it is considered alongside a set of writings it has overshadowed for too long: those of Cohn's wife Vera Broido.
