The transatlantic relationship experienced a profound shock with Donald Trump’s re-election and his administration’s decision to seek a separate peace with Russia in its war against Ukraine. Nevertheless, it would be a mistake to assume that the transatlantic partnership has suddenly taken a turn for the worse or that the Trump administration is the primary source of tensions between the United States and Europe. Strains within the partnership have been building for decades across a range of domestic and international issues. Trump is more a symptom than a cause of this transformation. The key question is whether the deep structures that bind the United States and Europe remain resilient. This workshop brings together scholars from both sides of the Atlantic to examine these foundational structures of Atlantic solidarity, the powerful forces acting upon them, and the new challenges facing Europeans and Americans.Participation in this event is by invitation only.
