In summer 2024 in the recent inquiry report on Poland under the Convention on all Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the CEDAW Committee condemned Poland for unduly restricting access to abortion. Dr Patrycja Dabrowska will share her lessons from the report and what can be learned from a human rights experimentalism perspective. She will explain how human rights and in particular reproductive rights were mobilized and what their protection requires in countries with rule of law issues that develop into illiberal or post-illiberal regimes.Dr Patrycja Dabrowska is a Fernand Braudel Senior Fellow at the EUI Law Department. As an EU Scholar she works at the intersection of public health governance, human rights law and risk regulation focusing on European/comparative jurisprudence and interdisciplinary approaches. She is a member of the EU and International Law Unit at the School of Law Kozminski University in Warsaw. In the past, she held positions at the School of Law, Queen’s University Belfast (2018-2021 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow) and Centre for Europe, University of Warsaw (2007-2019 tenured post). She holds degrees from the Jagiellonian University in Cracow and the European University Institute in Florence. She publishes widely on human rights protection under global health threats, EU biotechnology, the role of courts, and novel modes of governance. She is also a member of the German Law Journal Editorial Board.
