Seminar in collaboration with the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science, and Culture (OEI)

AI is rapidly transforming the educational landscape. While it offers tools that promise to personalize learning and enhance literacy, the use of AI in education also raises significant concerns about the potential loss of critical skills and over-reliance on technology, which run the risk of undermining democracy. In an increasingly information-saturated environment, where critical thinking will be essential, integrating AI tools into classrooms must necessarily go hand in hand with a stronger emphasis on analytical skills development in an attempt to preserve our democratic societies.

Moreover, as highlighted by UNESCO in its report on AI and education, while AI has the potential to enhance access to education, it could also exacerbate existing inequalities. In Latin America, the adoption of AI technologies in education is happening unevenly, resulting in limited access for vulnerable communities. This raises the risk of a future where AI becomes a privilege for the few rather than an opportunity for all.

In the tenth meeting of our Ibero-American Network for Democracy and AI (REDemocracIA), we aim to address these and other pressing issues with the guidance of leading experts in the field.

The event is open to researchers, educators, policymakers, and anyone interested in the intersection of AI and the education sector. Through constructive dialogue, we will seek to identify the main challenges posed by AI's impact on the present and future of education, and we will explore ways to use AI responsibly while promoting both innovation and the development of essential skills in the future of education.
